The health care of today is in many ways depending on the use of antibiotics and the threat of resistance is a shared concern. This educational day is dedicated to antibiotics and how to use them in a wiser way. This day is designed for tomorrow!

"Antibiotics in Focus" is an educational day open for all veterinarians with an interest in this topic. All lectures will be held in English by the leading international and national speakers. Working together through a day filled with lectures, workshops and great conversations based on shared knowledge within the area of antibiotics.

The concern for antimicrobial resistance is a shared concern for all of us, not just in the clinics but also among pet owners and on a national and international level. The increasing awareness about antimicrobial resistance calls for a paradigm shift in how we use antibiotics in a sustainable way. Ceva Animal Health and our partner for the day, AniCura, truly hope this education day will help you make a difference in the way you choose and use antibiotics in your clinic in the future.

During his lectures, Luca will share his experience and knowledge on antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance to provide good tips for you to use in the clinic. State-of-the art guidelines for antimicrobial use in companion animals: Part I

In this session Maria Karlsson will focus on  how to select the right patient based on the underlying cause for infection as well as the pathogen that causes it. To be successful in optimizing choice of antibiotics it is essential to choose the right antibiotic substance and dosing based on patient and pathogen selection,  or else you may risk under- or overtreating your patient. The session will be interactive with the help of mentometer voting.

Antimicrobial resistance in companion animals in DK and the Nordic countries

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a problem in both the human and animal sector. In companion animals, there has been a worldwide emergence of resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant staphylococci over the last decade. It is important that veterinary practitioners stay up-to-date on such resistance problems, as they are likely to (sooner or later) face difficult cases in their practice owing to multidrug-resistant bacteria. Also, veterinarians have a shared responsibility for keeping overall levels of resistance to a minimum. Over the years, Peter Panduro Damborg's research has largely centered on antibiotic resistance with emphasis on companion animals. He also focuses on solutions to the problem, for example through development of the Danish guide for antibiotic treatment of companion animals. At this event, he will discuss, with his colleagues Lisbeth Rem Jessen and Luca Guardabassi, the emerging problems of antibiotic resistance with emphasis on the situation in Scandinavia. He is looking forward to a fruitful discussion, and strongly encourage that participants interact and thereby contribute to the discussion.

The second edition of the Danish National Antibiotic Use Guidelines was released in October 2018. Lisbeth Rem Jessen played a key role in the revision and in this session she will discuss some of the major changes that were made, mainly within management of UTI, and why they came about.

Fighting antibiotic resistance in a European veterinary care company

In 2015 AniCura, a European provider of veterinary care, established a medical quality program focused on improving patient safety and medical outcome. Fighting antimicrobial resistance forms an integral part of AniCura’s quality program. The work is centered around three areas; i) securing in-clinic infection prevention and control, ii) ensuring wiser use of antibiotics at all clinics and iii) actively monitor surgical site infections. As AniCura treats around two million patients every year, the company has significant impact on the use of antibiotics in veterinary care. Ulrika Grönlund will present AniCura's European crusade to curb antimicrobial resistance and look forward to sharing AniCura's journey with you at this special day where we keep the focus on rational use of antibiotics and AMR.

Hospital infection

This workshop will include a hospital acquired infection in a patient. We will discuss what a hospital acquired infection is in smaller groups and you will be asked to solve the puzzle of how to work up and treat your patient. We will also discuss how to locate the source of infection and how to get rid of it - if possible. Helle Texel is looking forward to a shared discussion and hope you will have fun solving this case.

Workshop Case 2

Urinary Tract Infection - a challenge

Solving a suspected UTI case is not always easy. In this case you will meet a challenging patient and in order to work-up and solve the case you will work in smaller groups and be able to get some help from “a friend”. We will work with cytological pictures, how and when to culture urine samples in-house and how to interpret the lab-results in the clinical setting.

The pyoderma patient: how to choose correct therapy and when treatment becomes challenging

What are optimal steps for managing the pyoderma patient most efficiently? In this workshop, you will approach a pyoderma case in small groups and discuss options for correct therapy. Additionally, we will discuss how to handle patients with multi-resistant bacteria in the clinic.
